Vitezslav Moudry visited the University of Bonn in July 2024. The main aim of the visit was to establish a collaboration with Anna Cord and her newly established team. With the help of Anna Cord, Ruben Remelgado, and Stephanie Roilo, Vitezslav continued work on two studies that began during his recent visit to Bologna: the quality of input data in species distribution modeling and the usability of canopy height models (CHM) derived from remote sensing for biodiversity assessment.
The first manuscript addresses the accumulation of error in input data for modeling species distribution, an important topic that has surprisingly not received much attention so far. The second manuscript deals with an equally important and timely topic. It highlights the limitations of predicted CHMs, calls for caution in their use, and emphasizes the need to unify European airborne laser scanning data to produce accurate CHMs.
In addition, we had fruitful discussions on potential research topics for the upcoming Biodiversa+ call. Finally, I took the opportunity to visit another department in Bonn, namely the Remote Sensing Research Group led by Zbyněk Malenovský.
