Early Research Mobility Experiences: My Visit Exchange to Bonn

Posted

Author: Michal Kučera

To make the most of my PhD journey, I sought early experience through a short research exchange at the University of Bonn. I wanted to immerse myself in a concentrated research environment, which I believed would help me refine my research concept and uncover connections with other scholars’ work. By engaging with new academic peers, I aimed to gain valuable feedback and insights. This experience also offered me the chance to explore a different academic culture, fostering reflection on how it might shape my research path moving forward. I kicked off my stay with a presentation of my research topic (Picture 1), which led to vibrant discussions with my hosts. Inspired by their insights, I crafted a concept note for an upcoming paper and engaged with Prof. Anna Cord and Dr. Ryo Ogawa. Their feedback steered me towards a literature review on the core vocabulary of my research and its nuances across different fields. Having the same language is crucial for interdisciplinary research topics.

My research focuses on “the sensitivity of landscape metrics and spectral indices to landscape change.” The primary goal is to develop a simulation framework that examines how these indicators respond to variations in data scale, landscape structure (including composition and configuration), and the nature of landscape change (in terms of type and magnitude). This simulation framework will allow the generation of random landscapes at different scales (Picture 2) and will also enable the simulation of landscape change based on a background variable within these generated landscapes. An essential feature of this framework is the ability to estimate parameters of an input landscape, which will help recreate its variations and provide a broader statistical sample for description or inference.

This initial research stay has established a strong foundation for future exchanges. I now approach these opportunities with greater confidence, fully understanding how to prepare, what key areas to focus on, and how to maximize my time effectively. The connections I forged during my stay have already shaped my thinking and are poised to pave the way for exciting collaborative projects ahead.

My time engaging in group sessions and informal discussions with members of the INRES group proved to be invaluable. These interactions not only deepened my understanding of the vibrant research environment at Bonn but also sparked my interest in potential future collaborations. Since refining my research focus, I am now working on my first manuscript, and the applied aspect of my research has gained new momentum thanks to the ideas and perspectives I encountered during my visit. I look forward to building on this experience through future exchanges and staying connected with the colleagues I met along the way. This exchange was not merely a research trip, it was an opportunity to grow, connect, and gain insight. I’m deeply grateful to the INRES team (Picture 3) for their hospitality and guidance, and I’m excited to see where this journey leads next.
